City Council on January 30 and 31, 2019, adopted the following: 1. City Council state its intention to designate the property at 901 Lawrence Avenue West (the Columbus Centre) under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, in accordance with the Statement of Significance (Reasons for Designation), attached as Attachment 3 to the report (January 28, 2019) from the Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning.

2. If there are no objections to the designation in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act, City Council authorize the City Solicitor to introduce the necessary Bill in Council. 3. If there are objections in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act, City Council direct the City Clerk to refer the proposed designation to the Conservation Review Board. 4. If the designation is referred to the Conservation Review Board, City Council authorize the City Solicitor and appropriate staff to attend any hearing held by the Conservation Review Board in support of City Council's decision to designate the property.

The subject property, 901 Lawrence Avenue West, contains the Columbus Centre, which is the focal point of a landscaped setting at the heart of a campus of properties all with strong cultural and social associations to the Italian community since 1972. The property also contains the former St. Mary's Training School and grounds operated by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd from 1941 to 1973. The property was included on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register in July 2018.

At its meeting in July 2018, City Council directed that a report on the designation of the property be brought forward to the first regular meeting of the new City Council in 2019. The property at 901 Lawrence Avenue West has been the subject of a redevelopment application which would result in the demolition of the Columbus Centre. This Motion is urgent as there is an appeal at the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal on this site. The Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning has prepared the attached report for Council's consideration.

City Council adopt the following recommendations in the report (January 28, 2019) from the Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning: 1. City Council state its intention to designate the property at 901 Lawrence Avenue West (the Columbus Centre) under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, in accordance with the Statement of Significance (Reasons for Designation), attached as Attachment 3 to the report (January 9, 2019) from the Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning.
