City Council on May 5 and 6, 2021, adopted the following: 1. City Council express its objections to the closure of neighbourhood court houses and send a copy of its decision to the Attorney General of Ontario, objecting to the amalgamation to the New Toronto Courthouse. 2. City Council request the City Manager, in consultation with the City Solicitor, to report to the Executive Committee by June 1, 2021 on the impacts of the closure of local court houses, such report to include how the court amalgamation will impact local businesses and access to justice for those living with disabilities.

The newly constructed New Toronto Courthouse will consolidate a myriad of smaller court locations in Toronto under one roof. The New Toronto Courthouse will be located at 11 Centre Avenue and is set to open in 2022. The opening of the New Toronto Courthouse will have negative impact for communities across Toronto. The loss of our local courthouses will marginalize those who are trying to access justice; result in an economic loss for small businesses in the surrounding area; and present security concerns.
