The 519 Community Centre is seeking capital funding in response to Councillor Wong-Tam and community stakeholder requests to move the exterior garbage zone from the north side of the property and improve sightlines and community access to Barbara Hall Park. Currently, the garbage is located on the exterior of the building, while City staff try to maintain it, given its exterior placement it is often unsightly and takes away from the community and tourists access to the Park and being able to fully enjoy the mural which depicts and celebrates the Two Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, Queer, Questioning, communities (2SLGBTQ+) community's fight for equality and justice.

Moving the garbage to the east side of the property in an enclosed space requires capital renovations to move entrances and exits to meet fire code requirements, appropriately manage cleaning, health and safety and pest management strategies. The proposed design will also improve the flow of community programs so they don't exit onto the splash pad; increase spaces for children and family play areas; and enhance community gardening.
