Islington Junior Middle School is located on the west side of Cordova Avenue, south of Dundas Street West, opposite Central Park Roadway. The school is in close proximity to the Islington Subway Station at the busy intersection of Islington Avenue and Bloor Street West. Students and pedestrians cross Cordova Avenue by way of an existing Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) at Central Park Roadway, immediately in front of the school.

The City of Toronto and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) encourage active transportation modes to and from school whenever possible. To that end, Islington Junior Middle School and the Toronto Lands Corporation have been pursuing the conversion of the existing PXO to a Traffic Control Signal (TCS) operation to improve safety for students. A 2019, Transportation Services study found that the warrants for the installation of traffic control Signals at Cordova Avenue and Central Park Roadway were very nearly met. Given the recent and ongoing development and redevelopment activities in the vicinity of the Islington Subway Station and the Etobicoke City Centre, this area will see an increase in vehicular traffic. This motion seeks to convert the existing PXO at the intersection of Cordova Avenue and Central Park Roadway to a Traffic Control Signal to enhance pedestrian and student safety.
