Authorization to Release Section 37 funds from the Development at 20 Edward Street to implement the Terry Fox Tribute Mural - by Councillor Mike Layton, seconded by Councillor Joe Mihevc

In commemoration of this inspirational Canadian hero, the City of Toronto, the University of Toronto and The Legacy Project are collaborating on a community-engaged Terry Fox Tribute Mural - a landmark mural to be painted on panels on the north side of the University of Toronto's Rehabilitation Sciences Building at 500 University Avenue. This site was chosen for its significance on the route that Terry followed through Toronto on his "Marathon of Hope," on his way to a huge rally in his honour at Nathan Phillips Square on July 11, 1980. Following an Intergenerational Advisory Committee selection process, supported by StreetARToronto (StART) and ArtworxTO: Year of Public Art, the design concept submitted by Toronto artists Alexander Bacon and Que Rock was chosen for installation during the summer of 2022. All costs associated with the commissioning, installation, maintenance and removal of the mural on the University of Toronto owned premises will be the sole financial responsibility of the City of Toronto. The Section 37 funds will support the creation of the artwork and supplement the committed budget contributions from StART and ArtworxTO. Sufficient Section 37 funds to fulfill this Motion have been secured and received by the City from the development at 20 Edward Street. This Motion is urgent due to the fact that funding needs to be provided to meet the project deadlines and be completed before the planned celebration.
