As filed
North York Community Council: 1. Authorized the installation of traffic calming (four speed humps) on Sutherland Drive, between Parkhurst Boulevard and Stickney Avenue, generally as shown in Drawing Numbers TC-778 and TC-778-1, dated June 2026, from the Director, Enforcement and Street Management, Transportation Services, in the attachment to the Revised Letter (June 25, 2026) from Councillor Rachel Chernos Lin.
On the agenda
As the city filed it
Residents on Sutherland Drive are experiencing serious traffic safety issues. Speeding and high traffic volumes are serious concerns, especially due to congestion on local arterial roads like Laird Drive and the suggested routes offered by navigation apps such as Google Maps and Waze, which often direct drivers to infiltrate neighbourhoods to avoid traffic. Many of the vehicles exceed the local speed limits. A community petition showed very strong support for traffic calming in the form of speed humps for Sutherland Drive between Eglinton Avenue and Stickney Avenue.

This motion proposes speed humps on Sutherland Drive between McRae Drive and Stickney Avenue, as well as between Parkhurst Boulevard and McRae Drive. Results from a recent study by Traffic Operations showed warrant criteria being met on the first segment. There was no data for the segment between Parkhurst Boulevard and McRae Drive, but as a continuation north and with greater length, speeding on this block is well known in the community to be as bad or worse as on the adjacent segment. Installing speed humps on the two-block stretch between McRae Drive and Parkhurst Boulevard will hopefully also bring some relief for the three blocks to the north (between Eglinton Avenue and Parkhurst Boulevard), where warrant criteria were not met.
