Road safety improvements around Coxwell Avenue and Mortimer Avenue in East York

This busy intersection is home to an elementary school, hospital, medical buildings, and the entrance to East York Civic Centre. As a significant gateway to vital services in East York, this is a priority area for increased road safety. As City Councillors across these shared Avenues, we are jointly asking for your support for a thorough review to consider road safety measures in the area. We need to look at a number of key areas outlined in the motion, as well as any other measures the City's road safety experts can recommend.

Hospital, and report back with a review of the area and recommendations for measures including but not limited to: Expanding the School Safety Zone around R H McGregor to include Coxwell Avenue, Durant Avenue, and Mortimer Avenue & Sammon Avenue East of Coxwell; Opportunities for improved pedestrian crossing and traffic controls at Coxwell Avenue and Mortimer Avenue; Improved signage to better warn road users to adhere to speed limits; Implementing an advance walk signal at the North/South crossing to align with the existing advance at the East/West crossing; Opportunities to implement enhanced measures based on the unique co-location of a school and hospital on both sides of the Avenue; Interventions to calm traffic such as shortened turn radii, widened sidewalks, and bump outs, particularly around corners of the intersection; Adjusting parking or curb lines to improve visibility and lower risk of collisions.
