In August 2020, Transportation Services began to review the need for traffic calming measures on London Street, between Markham Street and Bathurst Street after my office received a request from neighbours to have the City address safety concerns on the street. London Street is a local road that operates one-way in the eastbound direction from Markham Street and Bathurst Street. It has a posted regulatory speed limit of 30 km/h and an average daily traffic volume of about 1252 between Markham Street and Bathurst Street.

The pavement width on London Street is about 7.3 metres and there are sidewalks provided on both east and west side of the road. Heavy vehicles are prohibited at all times and there is no TTC service provided on London Street. Transportation Services conducted a mid-block speed and volume study on London Street in November 2-4, 2022. The study findings were assessed against the City of Toronto's traffic calming policy and it was found that London Street, does not satisfy the installation criteria for traffic calming devices. This being said, we know that meeting the required thresholds can be difficult, and even one vehicle travelling at the wrong speed at the wrong time can have tragic consequences. We must act to prevent speeding on our roads and speed humps are an excellent physical barrier to contain speed.
