On the agenda

As the city filed it

I am writing to respectfully request the placement of a temporary school crossing guard at the intersection of Warden Avenue and Freeman Street. The school parent community has continued to raise serious concerns about safety at this intersection. The location was flagged by residents as having an accident in previous years, in addition to this crossing being a main pedestrian pathway for students leaving Birchcliff Public School.

Parents and school staff report that driver behaviour, including aggressive driving and failure to yield, further increases the risk for children and families walking to and from school. Given these ongoing concerns, and in light of the unique design and operating conditions at this intersection, I am requesting that Scarborough Community Council override the technical analysis and authorize the placement of a temporary school crossing guard at Warden Avenue and Freeman Street until December 31, 2026. This temporary measure would provide an important layer of protection for students and families while longer term safety and design improvements are explored. Thank you for your consideration of this request. I would be pleased to work with Transportation Services staff, the school, and the wider community to support implementation and any further review that may be required.
