Naming Long-Term Care Home at 4610 Finch Avenue East In Honour of Bernice Redmon
Naming this long-term care home after Bernice Redmon would recognize a pioneering Torontonian whose life and career broke down racial barriers in the healthcare system. Born in 1917 and raised in Toronto at a time when Black women were denied access to nursing programs in Canada, Redmon pursued her education in the United States before returning home in 1945 to become the first Black nurse to practice in public health in Canada. Later on she would become the first Black Canadian admitted to the Victorian Order of Nurses. Her determination, professionalism, and commitment to patient care helped pave the way for future generations of Black healthcare workers across the country. Naming this new Long-Term Care Facility in her honour would also reflect the values of inclusion, equity, and public service that are central to Toronto's healthcare and community care systems. Long-term care homes are places built on compassion, dignity, and service to others - values that Redmon demonstrated throughout her career despite facing discrimination and systemic barriers. Honouring her legacy would serve as an important acknowledgment of the contributions Black Canadians have made to healthcare, often without the recognition they deserved at the time. Naming a public institution after Bernice Redmon would help preserve an important part of Canadian history while inspiring future generations to continue advancing equity in healthcare and public life. As Toronto continues its efforts to celebrate its diverse histories and build a more inclusive city, commemorating Bernice Redmon through the naming of a long-term care home would be a meaningful and lasting tribute to a true Canadian trailblazer.
Scarborough Community Council: 1. Directed the City Manager to undertake a review of the name "Bernice Redmon" for the Long-Term Care Home located at 4610 Finch Avenue East to honour Bernice Redmon and direct the General Manager, Senior Services and Long-Term Care to report back to Scarborough Community Council at the July 2026 meeting, in accordance with the City of Toronto's Commemorative Framework and the City of Toronto Property Naming Policy, and with the inclusion of a biographical plaque.

Lynn Road, Florens Avenue, and McIntosh Street - Traffic Calming (Speed Humps)
Lynn Road, Florens Avenue, and McIntosh Street are local residential streets in Ward 20 where residents have raised concerns about speeding and road safety. The Councillor's office conducted resident flyer drop surveys to better understand support for traffic calming. Strong community support for traffic calming was recorded for: Lynn Road, between Cornell Avenue and Manderley Drive Florens Avenue, between Herron Avenue and Pharmacy Avenue McIntosh Street, between Park Street and Highview Avenue The proposed speed humps are intended to reduce vehicle speeds, improve pedestrian safety, and create a calmer and safer street environment for residents, families, seniors, children, cyclists, and other road users.
The Scarborough Community Council: 1. Requested the General Manager, Transportation Services, to study the feasibility of installing traffic calming measures, including speed humps, on Lynn Road between Cornell Avenue and Manderley Drive, Florens Avenue between Herron Avenue and Pharmacy Avenue, and McIntosh Street between Park Street and Highview Avenue, and, if warranted, report back to Scarborough Community Council by the first quarter of 2027 with recommendations to authorize installation.

Cleanside Road and Mendelssohn Street - Traffic Calming
Cleanside Road and Mendelssohn Street are local residential streets where residents have raised ongoing concerns about speeding, road safety, and the need for stronger traffic calming measures. These streets are used daily by residents, pedestrians, cyclists, families, seniors, children, and other vulnerable road users travelling through the neighbourhood. Through consultation and flyer drops conducted by the Councillor's office on the affected streets, a majority of residents expressed support for the installation of speed humps. Residents noted that speeding vehicles create unsafe conditions, reduce comfort for people walking or cycling, and impact the overall safety and livability of the neighbourhood. The proposed speed humps are intended to reduce vehicle speeds, improve road safety, and create a calmer and safer environment for all road users. The affected roads are currently under provincial ownership and have not yet been assumed by the City. Once the roads are assumed, the approved traffic calming measures will be enacted as instructed by Transportation Services. This item recommends the installation of speed humps on Cleanside Road and Mendelssohn Street, as outlined in the Transportation Services drawings dated May 2026.

The listed streets are local residential roads where residents have raised concerns about speeding, road safety, and the need for safer neighbourhood conditions. Through consultation and flyer drops conducted by the Councillor's office in the surrounding area, residents expressed support for measures that would help reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety. The proposed 30 km/h speed limit designation is intended to create a calmer and safer street environment for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, children, seniors, and all road users travelling through the neighbourhood.
