  Endangered Species Reserve Fund - 2021 Budget

  The Endangered Species Reserve Fund (ESRF) supports conservation and education projects to benefit endangered species in Canada and around the world. The 2021 Endangered Species Reserve Fund Budget is attached for approval.

  2021 Board and Committee Meeting Dates

  The purpose of this report is to propose meeting schedules for the Toronto Zoo Board of Management and its Committees for 2021.

  The Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo: 1. Adopted the 2021 calendar of meeting dates for the Board and its Committees, as set out in the revised report (December 1, 2020) from the Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Zoo. 2. Dissolved the Strategic Planning Committee and established a Master Planning Committee, with committee members to be appointed on a volunteer basis and meetings to be scheduled at the call of the Chief Executive Officer.

  It is recommended that: 1. The Toronto Zoo Board of Management consider and adopt a 2021 calendar of meeting dates for the Board and its Committees. 2.   Animal Lives with Purpose Plan

  The purpose of this report is to introduce our Animal Lives with Purpose Plan (ALP Plan) for approval. This plan guides our decisions regarding the animals we house and allows us to employ our resources to maximum effect and to the ultimate benefit of the wildlife populations that we work together to preserve. As Canada's leading accredited zoo, we recognize the urgency of employing our knowledge base and collaborative practices for the preservation of species and the conservation programs they require.

  Legislation in the Senate of Canada

  This report discusses Bill S-218, a bill that was introduced in the Senate of Canada on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 by Senator Murray Sinclair called An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act (great apes, elephants and certain other animals). The bill is also titled the Jane Goodall Act. This bill proposes to amend the Criminal Code to create offences respecting great apes, elephants and certain other non-domesticated animals in captivity. It also amends the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act to require a permit for the import, export or interprovincial travel of great apes, elephants and certain other non-domesticated animals and to prohibit the importation or exportation of elephant ivory, with certain limited exceptions.

  The Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo: 1. Adopted the recommendations in Confidential Attachment I to the report (November 20, 2020) from the Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Zoo. 2. Directed that Confidential Attachment I be made public upon the passing of Bill S-218 by the House of Commons or at the Chief Executive Officer's discretion.
